In this episode, Nicole and Shanna sat down with Justine Miller to learn about Ayurveda. Justine, also known as Ayurveda Girl, explains that Ayurveda is the sister science to Yoga. Many in the Yoga world say “Yoga took an airplane to America and Ayurveda took a boat and is trying to catch up right now”. We learn that Ayurveda is about 5,000 years old and is known to be the oldest healing system in the world. It is all about balance - finding ways to bring your body back into balance through diet, daily rituals, and awareness. The main approach to care in Ayurveda is preventative -- looking for warning signs early before sickness or issues arise.

There are five elements that Ayurveda recognizes, which are ether, air, fire, water, and earth. It is from these five elements that everything else comes from, including our natural states. These natural states come in three forms called the doshas - vata, pitta, and kapha. Each person has a prakriti - natural classification of oneself into one of these doshas, and vicrati - the state of imbalance you may be in any one moment. Each dosha type has certain lifestyle approaches that would best bring them back into balance.

If this all seems a bit overwhelming and you want to simply try a few things on for size from the Ayurvedic lifestyle, Justine gives three diet tips and three fun things to try. Three Ayurvedic diet tips include eating seasonally, playing with spices and warm foods, and eating mindfully. Three fun things to try include tongue scraping, starting the day with hot water or hot water with lemon, and making lunch the biggest meal of the day.

In the “You Want Me To Do What??” section, we learn the things that Shanna and Nicole tried on for size. Shanna began adopting some of the Ayurvedic rituals such as tongue scraping and dry brushing each morning. Nicole gave the tips that Justine provided a try and found that making lunch the biggest meal of the day worked for her.
