I’ve Used CBD for a Year – Here’s my Unfiltered Experience

When I first heard about CBD, I didn’t think too much about it. I felt like I was pretty dialed in with my health and wellness. Plus, I didn’t deal with anxiety or have any sleep issues – the two main things I heard CBD helped with. It wasn’t until I had friends and family asking what I thought about CBD and if they should be using it that I finally decided to learn about it. And once I learned about it and how it worked in & with your body, I was “all in” with CBD. (So all in, in fact, that I now work for a CBD company. It must be said that I started taking CBD with no intention of working in the industry and would still be taking it a year later even if I wasn’t working for a CBD company.)
Over the past year, my CBD routine has evolved, and I’m currently in the midst of changing up my dosage again because…2020. Fortunately the company that I work for (and one of the main reasons that I chose to work for them) has a team of CBD Educators & Dosage Specialists that any customer of Equilibria has access to. Why does this matter? Because CBD is not a one-size-fits-all thing nor does your height and weight determine the amount you take. Each body is different. For example, one of my friends, a man who weighs 70 lbs more than me and is 6-7 inches taller than me, takes half as much as I do. Having someone that is trained in cannabis education and CBD dosing available to guide you in finding what’s right for you is critical. If I didn’t have that, I would have given up on CBD after the first couple weeks of taking it (and would not be working for Equilibria).

Why I Tried CBD in the First Place
While anxiety, pain, and poor sleep are some of the commonly cited reasons for why people use CBD, I don’t suffer from any of those things. And I’m fortunate enough not to have any major health complaints. I do, however, have my fair share of daily stress, and, quite frankly, that amount of stress is not healthy for anyone. Our bodies were built to deal with the short bursts of stress (think running away from imminent danger) not the persistent stress of overbooked schedules, too many emails, and constant pressure to meet deadlines. And let’s not mention what 2020 has done to stress levels. Knowing that I live more of my time in a stressed out state than a calm one (if I’m being honest), I knew that CBD could help bring some balance to my body.
Where I Started with CBD
I started with using just the regular strength CBD oil from Equilibria and took a dropper full in the AM and a dropper full in the PM before bed (each dropper of the regular strength equals 10mg so I was using 20mg of CBD a day). When using the oil, I hold it under my tongue for about a minute before swallowing. This allows the CBD to enter the bloodstream through the sublingual glands. When used this way, the CBD is a little more fast-acting than something like a softgel or a gummy.
After following this regimen for about two weeks, I had a call with one of Equilibria’s Dosage Specialists to talk through how things were going. What I thought would be a quick 5-10 minute call turned into a 30 minute discussion about my wellness goals, how I was using CBD, the need to switch up my routine, and ways to use CBD beyond balancing out my stress. I got off the call feeling both supported and educated. I had honestly gone into the call with the thought that CBD really just wasn’t for me as I wasn’t “feeling” anything up until that point.
After this call, I stayed with 20mg (2 full droppers of regular strength) of CBD per day, but switched to taking it in the morning and at lunch. I would stick with this routine for about 8 months before deciding to switch things up on my own to help with added stress from the pandemic.
How I Knew the CBD was Working
I’ve had plenty of friends talk about feeling the positive effects of CBD within days of starting to use it – getting a sound sleep for the first time in years, feeling like they can take a deep breath when anxious, or noticing they don’t get upset as easily as they would in the past. But I honestly never felt the effects of CBD – at least nothing that I could directly point to after taking it. For a while, I just trusted the science behind CBD and knew that I have done plenty of other things for my well-being that I couldn’t immediately feel. So I figured that was the case for me with CBD until I had a few days of travel that threw me off my routine. When I wasn’t taking it regularly, I started to notice that I was more easily triggered and could be flustered by stressful situations. That’s when I had my ‘a-ha’ moment with CBD. It indeed was working, just not in as dramatically noticeable of a fashion as it was for some of my friends.
Why I'm Changing My Routine Again
As I mentioned, I stuck to my routine of 20mg per day – 10mg upon waking and 10mg at lunch – for 8 months. Then the pandemic with the isolation of quarantining & social distancing ramped up my stress and feelings of anxiousness to such a level that I instinctively reached for more CBD. Having worked for Equilibria for four months at this point, I figured I could experiment on my own without needing the guidance of the Dosage Specialists. So I increased my intake to 30mg per day – 10mg upon waking, 10mg at lunch, and 10mg before bed. This was based off of nothing more than my own belief that I could figure it out on my own. And maybe it worked a little, but I was still feeling the stress. Finally, I admitted that I couldn’t figure it out on my own and booked an appointment with one of Equilibria’s experts.
Why I waited so long to talk with someone who has the experience and training in CBD is beyond me. In talking with one of our Dosage Specialists, I learned a few things. First, I should be taking my first dose of CBD after my run in the morning so that the CBD can work with the anandamide, an endocannabinoid also known as the “Bliss Molecule,” that my body creates due to the physical activity. Also, if I’m feeling no relief from the stress symptoms, then I definitely need to switch up my dose. Beyond that, I really should take the step up to the extra strength CBD oil that Equilibria has. (Equilibria’s extra strength CBD oil is 50mg per full dropper.) And that’s where I am today – a few days into using the extra strength oil, starting with a quarter dropper each (12mg per dose) after my morning run, at lunch, and before bed. In two weeks I’ll touch base with my Dosage Specialist and see where I might need to go from there. I still haven’t felt the immediate effects that some of my friends have talked about with using CBD, but I am not experiencing my stress as intensely. I’ll be sure to keep this post updated once I figure out where I land with my dosage.
Don't Forget Topical CBD - especially Equilibria's Relief Cream
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the relief cream. I literally slather this on my legs, lower back, abs, and neck after my marathons. While my body isn’t instantly recovered, the level of soreness is a 4 or 5 out of 10 when it used to be an 8 or 9 for days after the marathon. I’ve also used it for plantar fascia pain and menstrual cramps. This stuff is the real deal.

But, if you have heard of other companies that you’ve thought of purchasing from, then here are a few things to look for:
1. Find out if their CBD is full-spectrum. Full-spectrum products will have CBD along with the up to 140+ other cannabinoids found in the plant. All of these other compounds ultimately make the CBD more effective thanks to the entourage effect.
2. Ask for their COAs (Certificates of Analysis) so you can ensure that the CBD is in fact under 0.3% THC. Also, you’ll be able to see levels of heavy metals, pesticides, etc. that you don’t want in anything you’d put in or on your body.
3. Find out how open they are to sharing exactly where they got their CBD from. Is it from a specific farm that they work with? Is it from a third-party distributor? For me, the key is really finding out how much the company knows about their CBD and where it comes from rather than it coming from any specific source.
My final piece of advice is to give CBD some time to work from you. This isn’t a miracle, quick fix. You may need to tweak your routine (which is why it is nice to have a personal Dosage Specialist), and it may take some time for the CBD to balance out your body’s imbalances. Don’t give up on CBD without giving it some time – and do yourself the favor and get yourself access to a CBD Educator & Dosage Specialist.
