CBD is all the rage. Yet, how much do you actually know about CBD? And, do you know what CBD is supposed to “do” for you or even how the different types of CBD products can benefit you? We’ve learned a lot that we are excited to share from the genius women of Equilibria, a Chicago-based premium CBD brand that offers high quality, full-spectrum CBD products along with free, personal dosage support.
What is CBD?
(Fair warning: this next section has a lot of science terms that we try to break down as best we can while still remaining accurate. Stick with us as we promise it will all make sense.)
For starters, we (humans) have an endocannabinoid system (aka ECS) that is critical for helping regulate a range of physiological processes in the body including inflammation, anxiety, sleep, mood and homeostasis. Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds that are needed by the ECS to carry out this crucial job. And not only do we create cannabinoids within our bodies, but we can also use cannabinoids produced by the Cannabis plant. This is where CBD comes in. CBD is one of over 140 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. When CBD and other plant-based cannabinoids are absorbed into the body, ECS receptors are stimulated. Given that stress is a central reason for the depletion of cannabinoids in our bodies, being able to supplement the ECS with plant-based cannabinoids is important since stress tends to permeate our modern life.
Why start a CBD routine
So, why does this matter and what is CBD supposed to be doing for you? The main thing to remember here is what the ECS is “responsible” for in the body: maintaining homeostasis in the body by regulating physiological processes. Some of the many processes that are affected by the ECS are digestion, inflammation, sleep, immune function, mood and appetite. Without getting too deep into the research and science of the functioning of our bodies, these important processes can get out of whack at any time for a number of reasons. The ECS is there to help bring things back in line as bodily functions are aimed at maintaining balance. (Very important note: an inability to maintain homeostasis leads to disease and even death.) CBD and other plant-based cannabinoids augment the levels of cannabinoids in our bodies and enhance our ability to make our own cannabinoids. In turn, the ECS can more effectively do its job.
Where to start with CBD
There are thousands of CBD companies with a variety of products. The first thing to ensure is that you are purchasing your CBD products from a company that is concerned with quality. If the company doesn’t have third-party lab results readily available on their website and can’t tell you exactly where and how they get their CBD, then move onto a different company. Truthfully, you want to find a company that can tell you about their entire supply chain from seed to finished product.
Next, you need to consider the “delivery mechanism” for the CBD. In real people speak, do you want to use the CBD topically or ingest it? While it may seem a little daunting to ingest CBD, this is the most effective way for your body to reap the most benefits of CBD. If you are open to trying CBD through ingestibles, there are a few different options, including softgels, oils, and tinctures. (A reputable CBD company will be able to instruct you how to use the different types of ingestibles that they sell.) If you are still a little wary of taking anything internally, you can start by using a CBD cream or balm that can be applied on the skin. Many CBD topicals are used to target soreness, stiffness, or pain by applying directly on the area that you are targeting for relief.
While this information may have you thinking that you need to start taking all of the CBD you can find, the recommendation from cannabis educators is to start with a low dose, keep a journal of any effects, and slowly increase your dosage until you achieve the desired results. Equilibria has a team of dosage specialists that you get access to when you purchase from them. If you have any questions or concerns about your CBD regimen, we highly recommend the team at Equilibria.
